What is an emoticon?
The word emoticon comes from a mash-up of emotion and icon. In its simpilist form, an emoticon is an animated gif. They are primarily used in instant messageing systems to express words and messges with visual emotion. Emoticons have become increasingly popular since MSN/Live Messenger allowed for the addition of custom emoticons to their service. Emoticons can be publically traded on instant messenger software (such as MSN/Live Messenger), and emotty is a tool that enhances this facilitation. Do not upload licenced or copyrighted emoticons. Please report copyright violations so they can be dealt with immediatly including removal.
How do I download an emoticon?
To download an emoticon, right click and save it to your desktop. Mac users might have a different method to save images from websites. Treat the emoticons like any animated gif.
How do I install emoticons on MSN/LIVE Messenger?
First download the emoticon to a local folder on your computer. Then open your messenger program and add it to your custom emoticons. For MSN/Live Messenger click tools > emoticons > create.
How do I back-up my emoticons?
After locating your emoticons, you may upload them instantly to your emotty account. If you are not sure if you have found an emoticon or not, you may still drag and drop the file into our msn messenger synchronization tool and test the emoticon validity. If the emoticon is valid it will show up in the emoticon panel below. If the file uploaded is not valid, a image conversion error will occur and be displayed in the panel as, "Invalid Emoticon." Just delete all the invalid emoticons with the emoticon management tool.
Where are the emoticons stored on my computer?
Our msn messenger synchronization tool will estimate you local emoticon directory based upon your windows operating system. If you do not use a windows operating system, then you will have to search your local files, specifically folders associated with your messenger service. Emoticons are usually stored with the file type .DAT with windows based systems and msn messenger. Most file paths to the emoticons are through the APPLICATION DATA folder. APPLICATION DATA is usually a hidden folder. To make it visible, adjust the FOLDER OPTIONS in the file explorer you are using.
What is my MSN account number?
Your windows account name is the name that you use to log in to your computer (or the default name that is automatically logged in). Usually this is seen when the computer boots. In windows XP, the account name is the name selected on the initial blue screen on start up.
How do I backup my emoticons?
Use our drag and drop free emoticon backup tool. Simply locate your emoticons on your computer and drag them into the upload applet. Within seconds they should appear in the emoticon management panel below.
How do I manage my backed up emoticons?
The emoticon management tool allows users to manage their backed up emoticons in their emotty account. Users can Select/deselect, mask/unmask, submit and delete their synchronized emoticons.
How can I select emoticons from the backup tool
To select an emoticon, just click it! Emoticons that are selected will appear with a bright green border.
What does the MASK feature do?
To mask or unmask an emoticon, make sure the emoticon is selected and then click the mask or unmask button. Masked emoticons are primarilly used for adult themed or sexy emoticons that people might want to keep on their account, but not have to look at. Sometimes emoticons can be heavily sexual and depict sex acts and the mask feature allows your eyes to take a break.
How can I submit my emoticons to the social network?
Please submit all your great emoticons to our social community. We will provide you with points as a contributer for all submitted emoticons. Once your emoticon has been submitted, it can be viewed by other members. After an emoticon has been submitted, it will not appear in your emoticon panel but it will be moved to your favourites section. Emoticons that are not submitted will be left private on your account only. To submit an emoticon, just make sure the emoticon is selected, and then click the submit button. All selected emoticons will now appear on a submit page where you must enter a primary tag and title that will define the emoticon.
How do I delete emoticons from the backup tool
To delete an emoticon just make sure it is selected and then click the delete button. You will be prompted for every emoticon selected.If you still require help, feel free to send us your questions.
